Welcome to the website of the ActivistSecurity collective. The purpose of is to provide a home for some of our publications on practical security for activists and campaigners, all of which are free to download - see below.
We've put a lot of time into the Activist Security Handbook - it is now a whooping 70 pages of tightly written text - and we hope it will be of use to every kind of campaigner. Small parts are specific to the United Kingdom but the majority of it will be suitable to people working all over the world.
It has been written by UK activists who have successfully campaigned for over a decade in the face of increasing repression from the state and corporations. However, we need your feedback and your corrections. If we have missed something out or have gotten it wrong, then it is vital you let us know at info@activistsecurity.org. This is intended as a resource for the entire social justice/anti-capitalist/environmental/animal rights collective movement, so it needs your imput as well. We are also willing to do talks in the UK and abroad if needed.
Publications

2) Infiltrators, Informers and Grasses - a guide on what to do if you suspect you may have an insider in your group, practical advice on detecting them and best practise on what to do once you have confirmation.
3) A Guide to Secure Meetings in Pubs - a short and to-the-point guide to meeting in pubs and other public spaces.
For those who speak french there is a good online guide to secuity for activists at guide.boum.org. If you know of any more do let us know.
We are generally happy for activists and campaigners to reprint any of this material as long as they are not profiting from it. However, we would be grateful if you dropped us an email to let us know.
Infiltrators
The ActivistSecurity.org collective has created a blog at network23.org/infiltrators with the aim of creating a repository documenting the infiltrators placed in various movements by the police and private security firms. We aim to provide an authoritive source which people can come to in order to bypass the rumour and disinformation that often accompany exposes.
Where an allegation is brought to our attention we will investigate as far as possible and if we agree we will give our collective's endorsement to the expose. Follow links for our statements on Becki Todd / Vericola Ltd and Lynn Watson.

After years of low interest rates the bank of england will surely increase the cost of borrowing.
Public debt is now falling.
Private debt ie household debt is rising.
That means another squeeze on ordinary peoples finances.
The help to buy scheme has been squashed by the bank.
The final clue in the banks desire to increase lending rates.
Interest rates will be raised to 2.5/3% initially, peaking at 5/6% in 18 months.
Do the math and work out how that will affect your mortgage and personal loans.
We are heading for another financial crash.
And it is soon.
The mistakes(?) of 2008 have not been learnt.
It will be worse...

The orders, designed to allow police to tackle anti-social behaviour, simply became a means of criminalising youthful indiscretion – and eventually a means of criminalising anything people found annoying. Some of the bizarre abuses of this power include:

Former Jersey minister Stuart Syvret to be jailed over blog allegations.
Jersey's former health minister has been sentenced to three months in prison after refusing to take down articles on his blog making serious allegations against a number of people on the island.
Stuart Syvret, described by one judge as "a thorn in the side of the [Jersey] establishment", did not attend the court hearing in the royal court in St Helier on Monday but was arrested at his home after locking himself in his flat.
According to John Hemming, a Liberal Democrat MP, Syvret has been unfairly prosecuted for revealing information in the public interest, including evidence that a nurse on the island may have killed some of his patients.
Hemming accuses the Jersey judiciary of behaving oppressively by misusing the Data Protection Act in order to silence its critics.
For a number of years Syvret has written a blog which publicises and examines what he sees as injustice and malpractice in Jersey. As a judge put it a number of years ago, the blog "frequently contains extremely grave allegations against people living in the island, some public figures some not. Many of the allegations, if not capable of justification, are highly defamatory."
From 1990 until 2010, Syvret was an elected politician in Jersey and from 2005 until 2007 served as health minister.
In April 2010 he was disqualified from membership of the States of Jersey - the island's parliament - ostensibly due to his absence from the island. For a period prior to his disqualification he was living in Hemming's flat in London as he launched and fought a number of legal actions, rallying against what he refers to as the "corrupt nature of Jersey's judiciary".

In parliament in 2009, Hemming used parliamentary privilege to reveal that Syvret had made murder allegations about a nurse on his blog. Hemming told the Commons: "He [Syvret] was then prosecuted under the Data Protection Act by Jersey. He was not allowed to adduce as evidence the case to which he referred on his web log, which is a public interest defence that he needed to reveal the failures of the judicial system in Jersey."
On 17 November, 2010 Syvret was convicted of two offences under the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2005, one of disclosing personal data without consent, and the other of processing personal data without being registered as a data controller.
After losing an appeal against conviction and refusing to take down his blog he was eventually jailed for contempt for three months at the end of 2011. In 2012 Hemming raised Syvret's case again in parliament to make public the fact Syvret had been served with a superinjunction by the court ordering him again to take down the offending posts from his blog.
Hemming told MPs that a number of individuals "have, with the assistance of the Jersey government, obtained a superinjunction against ex-senator Stuart Syvret – under the Data Protection Act of all things – to prevent from him saying things about them on his blog … ."
None of the four individuals named has ever attempted to sue Syvret for defamation. Instead, the data protection commissioner in Jersey, Emma Martins, has prosecuted him under the Data Protection Act.
She argues, highly unusually, that Syvret is the "data controller" of his blog (a position usually held in a large corporation) and that he has no right to name and shame people on his blog, whether or not the information he reveals about them is correct.
Hemming said on Monday: "This use of the Data Protection Act to silence people in Jersey is oppressive.
The Guardian spoke to Syvret on Friday after he learned of his sentence. He claimed to have locked himself in his flat and said: "I am about to become a political prisoner in Jersey – again, for whistleblowing, for being a dissident.

Every month I hear/read that house prices are going up.
As if that is a good thing.

In the north they are stagnant or falling.
Yet in london they appear to be rising on a daily basis.
This is not a yardstick of a buoyant economy.

November 15, 2013, is the day a judge will sentence Jeremy Hammond to 10 years for speaking truth.
For those who are not familiar with the name, Jeremy Hammond is one more in a growing number of whistleblowers being attacked and forced into silence for bringing the illegal and unconscionable abuse of the rights of the people to light.

For those who are not familiar with the name, Jeremy Hammond is one more in a growing number of whistleblowers being attacked and forced into silence for bringing the illegal and unconscionable abuse of the rights of the people to light.
Joining the likes of Barrett Brown, journalist; Chelsea Manning, United States Army soldier; Edward Snowden, computer specialist; William Binney, former NSA official-mathematician and code breaker…and a host of others who have been attacked, arrested, prosecuted, investigated, harassed, maligned and many jailed under the guise of “security and protection,” Jeremy Hammond, a political activist, web developer and musician from Chicago, is a hero to those of us who truly believe in transparency and accountability – of our government, of corporations and of each other.
Jeremy Hammond only did what his conscience demanded of him. He was involved in hacking and leaking information from Strategic Forecasting, a private security firm. The information revealed that Stratfor had been spying on human rights activists at the behest of corporations and the U.S. government – those “clients” include large banks, government contractors as well as police departments, state troopers, and other city, state and federal agencies in the US and across the globe (this includes information gathered on and for use against the Occupy movement)
In December, 2011, a group of hactivists broke through the security of Stratfor’s system and gathered information to include emails and credit card accounts for clients then left a message for Stratfor.
By Monday, February 27, 2012, Wikileaks began their release of emails dating from 2004 through 2011 – ” The Global Intelligence Files” – more than five million emails from Texas-headquartered Stratfor.
Also on that Monday, Twitter became twittering with tweets from @AnonymousIRC, confirming it was the source of the WikiLeaks release.
“We promised you those mails and now they’ll finally be delivered. Five million (that’s 5,000,000) emails at your pleasure,” said the Anonymous account.
“There’s a treasure trove of nasty details in those emails. We think there’s something for everyone.”
Emails published through Wikileaks, reported on in the Guardian, as well as the Anonymous’ “Christmas present” left on Stratfor’s servers left the CIA wanna-bes, Stratfor, embarrassed, to say the least.
Jeremy was arrested in March, 2012 and by August, 2012, plead guilty to a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) and is now facing a maximum sentence of ten years. That 10 years is more than his “co-conspirators”, in the UK and elsewhere, have received – many only received 16 months for their part in the act; others are already free – but Jeremy, in the US, will be looking at a decade.
In his statement at the time of the arrangement, Jeremy writes:
Today I pleaded guilty to one count of violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. This was a very difficult decision. I hope this statement will explain my reasoning. I believe in the power of the truth. In keeping with that, I do not want to hide what I did or to shy away from my actions. This non-cooperating plea agreement frees me to tell the world what I did and why, without exposing any tactics or information to the government and without jeopardizing the lives and well-being of other activists on and offline.
During the past 15 months I have been relatively quiet about the specifics of my case as I worked with my lawyers to review the discovery and figure out the best legal strategy. There were numerous problems with the government’s case, including the credibility of FBI informant Hector Monsegur. However, because prosecutors stacked the charges with inflated damages figures, I was looking at a sentencing guideline range of over 30 years if I lost at trial. I have wonderful lawyers and an amazing community of people on the outside who support me. None of that changes the fact that I was likely to lose at trial. But, even if I was found not guilty at trial, the government claimed that there were eight other outstanding indictments against me from jurisdictions scattered throughout the country. If I had won this trial I would likely have been shipped across the country to face new but similar charges in a different district. The process might have repeated indefinitely. Ultimately I decided that the most practical route was to accept this plea with a maximum of a ten year sentence and immunity from prosecution in every federal court.
Now that I have pleaded guilty it is a relief to be able to say that I did work with Anonymous to hack Stratfor, among other websites. Those others included military and police equipment suppliers, private intelligence and information security firms, and law enforcement agencies. I did this because I believe people have a right to know what governments and corporations are doing behind closed doors. I did what I believe is right.
I have already spent 15 months in prison. For several weeks of that time I have been held in solitary confinement. I have been denied visits and phone calls with my family and friends. This plea agreement spares me, my family, and my community a repeat of this grinding process.
I would like to thank all of my friends and supporters for their amazing and ongoing gestures of solidarity. Today I am glad to shoulder the responsibility for my actions and to move one step closer to daylight.

What Happens To The Victims Of North Wales Child Abuse ?
Suspicious deaths of child abuse victims include:-
Robert Chapman, a former resident of Bryn Alyn, fell to his death from a railway bridge.
Robert Arthur Smith, a former resident of Bryn Alyn, killed himself in May 1978, aged 16, by overdosing on painkillers.
Barry Williams, former resident of Little Acton Assessment centre, Clwyd, found dead in a flat where he lived in poverty, aged 21.Peter Davies died 1985.
Adrian Johns, former resident of Bryn Alyn, died in a 1992 fire aged 32 in Brighton, Sussex. Verdict - unlawful killing.
Heath Kelvin Jones, former resident of Bryn Alyn, found dead in 1992 in a bedsit, aged 18. Cause of death, acute respiratory failure due to solvent abuse.
Peter Wynn hanged himself in January 1994, aged 27.
Brendon Randalls, former Bryn Estyn resident, died aged 27 from alcohol abuse in April 1994.
Richard Williams was found dead in a car aged 18 in July 1994.
Craig Wilson hanged himself in November 1994 aged 16.
Lee Johns, also known as Lee Homberg, former resident of Bryn Alyn where it was alleged he had been sexually abused. Died in February 1995 aged 37.
Mark Humphries hanged himself in February 1995 aged 31.
Simon Birley, former resident of Bryn Estyn, was found hanging in May 1995 aged 27
Tony Wallis found dead 1996.
Journalist Nick Davies wrote in 1997 that: - On the fringe of the tribunal hearing, there are disturbing suggestions of a violent cover-up. The London Evening Standard has run a series of stories about two brothers, Adrian Johns and Lea Homburg, who were abused by a convicted paedophile named John Allen. Allen ran a complex of homes in North Wales and London and is said to have been supplying boys to wealthy outsiders. The Standard reported that the two brothers were trying to blackmail him when, in April 1992, Adrian was burned to death in a house fire in Brighton. Lea later died in mysterious circumstances.
A dozen others who complained of abuse by the alleged ring have also died. One is said to have slipped on ice on a railway bridge and fallen to his death. Another, who was found dead in his flat was said to have died of natural causes; he was aged 21. Several are said to have committed suicide although in the case of one of them, his mother said his supposed suicide note was written in someone else’s handwriting. Others died apparently through abusing heroin, alcohol and solvents’.
