The episode tells the true story of Elsa Garcia (later known as Esther Combs). As a 4-month-old infant in January 1970, she was kidnapped from the Baptist Children’s Home orphanage in Valparaiso, Indiana, by Rev. Joseph Combs (a Baptist preacher) and his wife Evangeline Combs. The couple illegally took her, renamed her Esther Combs, and claimed they had adopted her. Instead of providing a home, they subjected her to nearly 20 years of extreme physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, treating her as a slave based on their claimed “divine instructions.”
